Q. How long is the transplant surgery?
The nephrectomy surgery last approximately 2 hrs. The transplant surgery lasts about 4 hours, but of course, may vary on a case by case basis.
The donor stays in the recovery room for 3 more hours, to be monitored, and then is sent to his/her room. The recipient is sent to a special room immediately after the surgery to prevent infections caused by the immunosupresion we have to induce.
The donor nephrectomy and the transplant surgery are performed simultaneously in adjacent operating rooms.
The donor’s nephrectomy procedure will begin 30 minutes before the recipient’s transplant surgery, which keeps the kidney cold for as little time as possible - from the moment of extraction to until the implantation in the recipient.
